The city's newspaper, the Vicksburg Daily Citizen, was remarkable in that it both documented and physically represented the effects of the siege..       After crossing the river below Vicksburg on Ap Grant fought a series of battles as he approached Pemberton’s defenses. With the help of Navy gunboats, Grant surrounded the city by May Grant launched major assaults on May 19 and 22 and was repulsed with heavy casualties, so by May 25 his army settled in for a siege. An excellent and well researched book on the Battle of Vicksburg. Vicksburg was a strong Confederate port for its war supplies and armaments. Union general Ulysses S.         The book and her bibliography reflect her attention to detail about the siege of Vicksburg and the period in general.
